Hello dear Streetwire readers. Mo Montgomery here. We all have heard about the catastrophic tragedy of the 7.0 earthquake that hit Haiti this past Tuesday January 12th. But few actually have kept up with the latest statistics and updates. An article on Wikipedia stated there have been 14 aftershocks between 5.0 and 5.9 on the rector scale. As of about 7 hours ago via www.entertainmentandshowbiz.com I discovered Haiti’s Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive told Associated Press (AP) that according to their statistics a minimum of 100,000 people are dead. Red Cross reported only 50,000 dead and about 3 million "affected". This disaster has significantly damaged or destroyed some of the major landmarks in Port-au-Prince, Haiti's capital. Among them being the Presidential Palace, the National Assembly Building, the Port-au-Prince Cathedral, and most hospitals. United Nations has reported that the headquarters of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) collapsed, and that the Mission's Chief, Hedi Annabi, is missing.
President Barack Obama has signed the required pact that will safeguard the Haitian’s temporarily protected to stay and work in USA and send aid to their relatives and friends affected by the earthquake back home. U.S. Southern Command Gen. Doug Fraser said in a press conference: “If the Citizens of Haiti will just remain in place and remain calm, help is on the way." Soul Pitch Streetwire is sad to report that it is rumored the $5 million plus raised as disaster relief has not reached the people of Haiti yet.
Recording Artist/Producer/Musician/Humanitarian Wyclef Jean, born in Haiti and founder of the Yele Haiti Organization, has been in the thick of the ruins on the streets of Haiti for days. He told his 1.3 million followers on Twitter less than 24 hours ago, "oNe word could describe my trip to Haiti Armageddon, I spend days picking up dead Bodies, the people need water , food , fuel , medicine!"
My heart goes out to the casualties of this destruction of massive proportions, and I pray for the survivors and families of the victims worldwide. Soul Pitch Streetwire urges you to help out no matter how little the contribution. Visit Yele.org or SalvationArmy.com for ways to give. Text "Yele" to 501501 to donate $5 to the organization that was providing relief to Haiti prior to the earthquake. (The charge will be applied to your next cell phone bill). You may also Google a local charity to give clothes, supplies, and non-perishable food to. Lastly we would like to applaud the efforts of the individuals and businesses that have already lent a hand. Especially UPS for providing free shipping of packages 50 lbs or less to Haiti January 15th.
